The Maidan revolution, named after Kiev’s Independence Square, had a tragic epilogue in the clashes between demonstrators and police. Nearly a hundred lives were lost from 18 to 20 February 2014, mostly at the hands of government snipers. For Ukraine, it was merely the start of a major crisis that spilled over into armed conflict in the east of the country between the regular army and separatist rebels.
